"Greenest Mile" Cermak Streetscape Generating National Buzz

The City of Chicago unveiled its Cermak/Blue Island Sustainable Streetscape recently to considerable acclaim. Building on the successes of its Green Alley program, which WRD worked on, the city sought to apply LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum building standards to a streetscape design – believed to be a first in the nation.

WRD’s Jay Womack was landscape architect on the project while director of sustainable design at Wight & Company.

His stormwater management solutions, which help divert 80 percent of rainwater that falls onto the site from the city’s sewer system, included a 100 percent rainwater-driven water feature and gathering place for students at nearby Benita Juarez Community Academy – engaging them in natural systems.
