Work to Begin on Lincoln Park Zoo South Pond
Interpretive stations will highlight local species.
The Lincoln Park Zoo recently unveiled plans to restore its popular South Pond. The $12 million restoration, designed by a team that includes WRD Environmental, will make the pond and its environs more ecologically friendly while engaging visitors in concepts of sustainability. On-site interpretation and outdoor classrooms will maximize the pond’s educational value.
The pond will be drained and deepened to make it more hospitable to wildlife and increase water quality. Its banks will be naturalized and native vegetation will be planted to absorb stormwater water and filter out impurities. Plans also call for a boardwalk around the pond, wind turbines and educational, multi-use pavilions.
