Urban wildlife has a new place to call home: the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. The 14-acre South Pond habitat, whose rehabilitation team includes WRD Environmental, is designed to be a “slice of prairie in the big city,” according to Steven Thompson, senior vice president of conservation programs for the zoo.

Though popular for its paddle-boat rides, the manmade South Pond had become stagnant and virtually devoid of wildlife. Not anymore. Naturalized slopes and a new island welcome waterfowl and other aquatic wildlife. Prairie plants and more than 100 newly planted trees are also helping to re-create a native ecosystem.

Watch for interactive displays and special zoo programs interpreting the new habitat.
