Nature Boardwalk's Endangered Herons Make Front-Page NewsIt’s hard not to be excited when you open the Chicago Tribune and one of your projects is featured on the front page. Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, a project for which WRD served as landscape architect on a team led by Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure, is causing a stir because it’s believed to be the largest nesting colony of endangered black-crowned night herons in Illinois.
As Nature Boardwalk was developed, the team took special steps to protect the herons roosting in trees within the project area. Since then, the colony and local wildlife have blossomed.
As the Tribune article reports, more than 160 species of birds and a variety of other wildlife have been spotted there.
