Kids Get Hands-On Lesson in Sustainable Design

Pencils in hand, they developed their designs. Shovels in hand, they brought their designs to life. More than 80 fourth/fifth graders at Prairie Crossing Charter School, in Grayslake, created an environmentally friendly garden at the school – from design, to budgeting, to installation.

WRD Environmental, which developed the landscape for the school’s new green building, guided them. Today the children are environmental stewards who are up on their native plants. They understand that stormwater can be re-used in the landscape. And they have a garden for which they can be quite proud.
