Douglas-Hart Nature Center Master Plan
Douglas-Hart Foundation, Client

New signage and environmentally friendly plantings are part of the new entryway WRD has designed for the Douglas-Hart Nature Center
The re-created woods, wetland and prairie of the Douglas-Hart Nature Center, in Mattoon, Illinois, are a stark contrast to the surrounding farmland. What started as a 30-acre nature preserve in the 1960s has more than doubled in size. So the Douglas-Hart Foundation retained WRD to develop a master plan for the increasingly popular nature center.
Two key parts of WRD’s plan use eco-friendly approaches to solve a drainage problem that impacts the nature center’s main building, and expand the capacity and efficiency of the parking lot. The plan also envisions distinctive entry signage, an outdoor classroom, a picnic area, an accessible trail system with several overlooks and a constructed savanna.
