New AGE (Active Green Environment) Garden

“Stealth exercise” is at the core of the New AGE (Active Green Environment) garden WRD designed and built for Clark-Lindsey Village retirement facility in Urbana, Illinois. A pilot of the University of Illinois' kinesiology and horticulture departments, New AGE provides an inviting outdoor setting for exercise – in a way that doesn’t look or feel like exercise.

Landscape features replace exercise equipment for increasing the physical activity of users. A trellis enlivens the garden with vining plants while providing a place to use stretching bands and build muscle strength. Paths of different lengths and surfaces encourage walking and increase cardiovascular endurance.

The design is flexible and modular, making it suitable for outdoor spaces of virtually any size and making it ideal for a range of applications – as facilities prepare for an influx of retiring Baby Boomers.
