Chicago Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility

A former incinerator on Chicago’s Goose Island is now the city's Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility. The recycled building, where Chicagoans can safely dispose of everything from paint, motor oil and pesticides to TVs, computers and cell phones, is also eco-friendly outside. Coordinating with several city departments, WRD conducted all site grading and oversaw installation of landscape stormwater management tools including bioswales, porous paving and native plants, by the city’s Greencorps Chicago program.
In partnership with OAI Inc. and Computers for Schools, WRD is also managing a program at the center that trains ex-offenders in refurbishing computers. The computers are donated to schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations, and low-income families.
