Henry R. Clissold School Campus Park
Chicago Public Building Commission, Client
Before: A two-acre sea of asphalt. After: A campus park.
On any given day, children might use Clissold School’s prairie and savanna plantings for environmental education or the play area to burn off energy. A retired couple might stroll the walking paths. Or neighbors might enjoy an after-work softball game on the regulation-size ball field.
WRD designed the site to not only be a community resource but to also promote environmental balance. Thanks to native plantings and thoughtful land contouring, very little stormwater runs off the park.
The site is also no longer an urban heat island; instead of heat generated by massive asphalt, greenery cools the surroundings.
