Green Bungalow Initiative

As part of an effort to preserve and update Chicago’s historic bungalow homes, the city launched the Green Bungalow Initiative, converting four existing South Side homes into model green bungalows.
In partnership with Greencorps Chicago, WRD installed the sustainable landscape at each home. We planted native plants, built raised planters and a pergola, installed porous paving and a patio. We also implemented the homes’ landscape water management systems, which included rain barrels and infiltration trenches that channeled stormwater runoff to landscaping beds – thus recycling it.
The project gave Greencorps trainees hands-on landscape experience under our guidance.
