Greencorps Chicago trainees getting hands-on field experience
WRD not only transforms sites into sustainable places, it also helps transform people. On behalf of the Chicago Department of Environment, WRD manages Greencorps Chicago, a pioneering green collar job-training initiative launched by Mayor Daley in 1994.
One of the oldest programs of its kind, Greencorps is a national model in advancing the green economy while providing critical re-entry opportunities and skills to unemployed individuals
Growth
Greencorps began as a horticultural job-training and community-greening pilot, annually providing 10 trainees with nine months of classroom and hands-on instruction. It has grown into a year-long, multi-track program, equipping 70+ trainees annually with life skills and job skills in horticulture, weatherization, electronics recycling and warehousing.
In the classroom, trainees study everything from math and computer skills, to resume preparation and interviewing, to best management practices. They also gain valuable certifications, such as CPR, Hazardous Work Operations and Emergency Responses, lead and asbestos.
Thanks to a range of partners, including community groups, nonprofits, and public agencies, trainees – and communities – gain from a variety of real-world projects in neighborhoods throughout the city.
Job Readiness, Placement & Retention
WRD’s diverse team of professionals features experts with specialties including case management; job readiness, entry, placement and retention; life-skills education and more. Whatever type of job trainees pursue after graduation, they are ready.
WRD Can Help
Greencorps has attracted inquiries from around the country by municipalities seeking to start similar programs. If you’re interested in launching one in your city or town, WRD can help.
