BP Pocket Parks - Urban Heat Island Initiative
Chicago Department of Environment, Client
Three former abandoned gas stations are now green spaces on Chicago’s South Side. BP donated the sites to the City of Chicago, which converted the brownfields as part of its Urban Heat Island Initiative.
Community input helped guide creation of the pocket parks, and WRD turned the vision into reality by installing the resulting designs. We planted more than 70 varieties of native species; installed paths and hardscape features, including a large fountain; and coordinated with the city on each site’s infrastructure needs.
With help from Greencorps Chicago, residents will help maintain these new, sustainable green spaces.
