Rain Barrel Program

When the City of Chicago wanted to launch a pilot rain barrel program as part of its water conservation initiative, it came to WRD. It had access to surplus plastic barrels that it wanted to convert into rain barrels, which could collect rainwater runoff from residents’ roofs and help prevent flooding. But it needed a way to make the idea work.
We assessed available supplies, devised alternatives for retrofitting the barrels, made mock-ups of the alternatives and developed the low-cost, efficient design. Greencorps Chicago then produced 500 of the rain barrels under our guidance.
The barrels are now a key part of the city's new stormwater ordinance.
