Railroad Rights-of-Way Improvement

Convert railroad rights-of-way into scenic, prairie-like gateways to Chicago – in a single growing season. That was the challenge the City of Chicago gave WRD.
First, we conducted feasibility studies and identified three pilot sites. We analyzed the sites and developed designs. Then we managed installation on a tight schedule with multiple subcontractors. We oversaw site cleanup, grading, topsoil importation, and planting of prairie seeds and plugs, resulting in more than five miles of railroad corridor improvement.
Lastly, we trained city personnel in maintaining the sites and developed an operations manual for them, to ensure that the plantings would safely become established in the years to come.
